THE NEED FOR SPEED

SLIDE THE WHISTLER SKELETON

Hurtle face-down  down Whistler’s skeleton track, experiencing what Olympic gold medalist Jon Montgomery describes as “opening your car door on the highway and placing your face millimeters from the road.” Lying on the world’s fastest sliding track like an instructed “sack of potatoes,” complete two 34-second runs of pure, incomprehensible adrenaline.  This rare bucket-list experience at Canada’s only public skeleton ride proves simultaneously terrifying and exhilarating, leaving you with wobbly legs, racing hearts, and bragging rights that will last a lifetime.

Cost:    Check the website for the latest prices.

Best time to Go:  The Skeleton is open in winter, and your experience takes about 2 hours.

Where to Stay:   For budget travellers, consider an experience in the Pangea Pod Hotel.  Check Whistler’s accommodation site for a wide variety of lodging.  We’ve had good times at the Westin and Fairmont.

Where to Eat: Tons of options (see Whistler’s Dining Site).   I’ve enjoyed Sushi Village, Umbertos, and some good times at the Barefoot Bistro too.

Getting There: From Whistler Village, reaching the Whistler Sliding Centre is straightforward. Take the free Village Shuttle #5 (Whistler Village-Upper Village Loop) to the Upper Village or walk approximately 15 minutes along the Valley Trail. From the Upper Village, follow signs toward the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, then continue uphill on Blackcomb Way. The Sliding Centre is located at 4910 Glacier Lane, about a 10-minute walk uphill from the Fairmont. Alternatively, you can take the Excalibur Gondola from Whistler Village to Blackcomb Base II and walk about 5 minutes to the facility. During winter, the easiest option might be taking the Village Gondola up Whistler Mountain, transferring to the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, and then riding down to Blackcomb Mountain where the Sliding Centre is located.

Notes from Robin:  Admittedly this one is not for everyone but think about the bragging rights!  You don’t have to do anything really, other than lie still and not panic. You can also give the bobsleigh experience a go, which is also a little insane.    The whole ride is over in less 35 seconds, which is why you’ll appreciate the  fact that sliders get two runs on the ice chute.   This is the fastest ice chute in the world.
