A half hour’s drive from Dawson City is Goldbottom, once a town of 5000 people, now home to just 5 residents. As you pan through rocks and gravel, learn about the gold rush and modern gold mining. Gold panning is a slow process for first-timers, but you might walk away with anywhere between one and ten flakes, all of which you can keep for your efforts.

Note from Robin : Just like the real thing, panning for gold takes place outdoors. Dress for the weather, wear comfortable outdoor shoes, and definitely bring bug spray. You’ll hopefully discover flakes of gold more valuable for sentiment than currency, as opposed to the 72-ounce nugget found in Eldorado Creek.
